So you want your spouse to join your solopreneur business? That could be awesome! Or it could totally suck. Before jumping into this life-altering arrangement, I have 7 things for you to keep in mind. You don’t want this grand idea to end up causing family problems. Don’t jump ahead of yourself
My wife worked with me early on in my business and it was awesome. So last year I thought it would be a fantastic idea to have her come back to work with me. We work really well together, so I was excited to have her join me again. But before having her quit her job and jump on board I knew I needed to consider a few things. There are 7 steps you should follow if you are considering asking your partner to join your business, so start with step 1. Press play now to hear all 7 steps.
First, ask these questions
Before you rush out to buy a new desk for your significant other, start with this first step. This step involves asking yourself and your spouse these 4 questions.
- Can you two work together?
- Do you want to work together?
- What activities will they do?
- Do they want to do that type of work?
If you don’t receive a yes to 3 of these questions (notice that one was not a yes or no question) then you should not proceed. If you want to keep a happy relationship and a successful business, do yourself a favor and carefully consider this step and the following ones.
If they said yes move on to the next steps
If you made it past the first step you can now move onto the next ones.
Step 2 – Write out each task you would have your spouse do. Make sure to take extra time and care to detail every task step by step so that they have a complete understanding of the job.
Step 3 – Show them the list you made and get confirmation that they really want to do this stuff. If not then hire someone else.
Step 4 – Run the numbers. Can you replace your significant other’s income and benefits with no stress? If no, then find somebody else. Will your health insurance be affected? How much will it cost? Does your spouse have other benefits that would be affected? Consider how this would affect your tax situation. Do you need to adjust your office space? Will you need any extra equipment? What will it all cost?
Step 5 – Add up all the costs from step 4 and consider whether you can realistically afford to have your spouse come work with you. If you can’t then hire someone else.
Step 6 – Do a test run. Have them help you on an evening or weekend. If they like it, great! If not, then stop here and find someone else.
Step 7 – Make a plan to implement all of the issues in step 4 and then welcome your new team member aboard.
