Renee learned quickly how to survive in the world
Renee Thornton left home at age 14 with nothing but a backpack. Kicked out of her home, her church, and eventually, her school, Renee was left with no choice but to quickly learn how to survive on her own. She had to learn how to make money and find a place to live. With no one in the world to help her, Renee relied on her voice and wits to persevere. Through speaking up for herself, Renee discovered her own value.
By the age of 18, she had earned enough money to leave her little town for good, only to have it stolen away. She left that town anyway and continued to work hard to survive.
Why do some thrive while others struggle when faced with hardship?
This life of adversity taught her the resilience she needed to not just survive, but thrive in the world. Renee not only graduated from high school, but went on to earn 2 bachelor’s degrees, 2 master’s degrees, and even a doctorate in Crisis Intervention.
Renee was determined to learn why some people develop the grit and resolve to push forward through adversity while there are others who falter upon encountering hardship
The 8 dimensions of wellness
The question of what wellness is has had different answers throughout the years, but it is important to take in a variety of factors that encompass the whole being. Many people can only come up with a few, but to achieve total wellness it is important to consider all 8 factors.
- Physical – Your body’s system is designed to give early warning signs when the system is under stress.
- Mental – Mental well-being includes cognitive health.
- Emotional – Learning to recognize the effects of the hormones that your body produces is one way to improve emotional well-being.
- Spiritual – Spiritual well-being has more to do with your purpose in the world.
- Financial – Financial health means being a good steward of your money.
- Social – Relationships fall into this category.
- Professional – Part of professional wellness is recognizing your professional trajectory in the workplace.
- Psychological – The psychological aspect of wellness has a lot to do with your attitude and the way you view yourself. Are you positive? Are you hopeful? Do you reach for goals?
Renee’s experience taught her to be resilient, but some people take a different turn when facing such distress. Her psychological and spiritual capital helped her believe that she could effect a positive change in her life. With these two dimensions of wellness in place, she was able to create a new life for herself that continually propelled her forward.
